IST 400 FAQs

 

Please post your questions and answers below, followed by a horizontal line if possible.

 


When does this class meet?

 

It meets in person on Saturday, 1/24/09 from 10a - 4p in Hinds 111. All other class sessions will be online. Live online class sessions are planned, but have not been scheduled yet.

 


 

What are the major components of this class?

 

1. Practical knowledge about new media and social technologies: sessions on the recent technologies like blogs, podcasts, social networks, etc.

2. Hands-on activities with new media and social technologies: labs that have you creating content, setting up various channels, etc.

3. Current theories on why this is all happening: based on 2 books (The Long Tail, and the groundswell) and my own presentation on a brief history of broadcast and digital communication.

4. Mid-term and final project: You will have one substantial individual assignment and one substantial group assignment (project teams will be assembled on 1/24).

 


 

Is there a textbook?

 

No. There are recommended texts, and online materials to be reviewed in advance, but no required textbook.
